Lake Sakakawea

Lake Sakakawea is a large reservoir located in the western part of North Dakota. It is the third-largest reservoir in the United States, with a surface area of approximately 368 square miles. The lake was created in the 1950s as part of the Garrison Dam project on the Missouri River. It is named after the Shoshone Indian woman, Sakakawea, who assisted explorers Lewis and Clark in the early 19th century. The lake is a popular destination for fishing, boating, camping, hiking and wildlife watching. It is home to a variety of fish species such as walleye, northern pike, perch, and bass, making it a popular fishing spot. The surrounding area also offers several recreational opportunities such as the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, Fort Mandan, and Four Bears Bridge. Visitors can also explore the historic Sakakawea State Park, which features a museum, hiking trails, and camping facilities.
